I don’t remember exactly where I first heard the idea of putting your own oxygen mask or life jacket on before helping others, but it’s something that has stayed with me over the years. As I’ve grown older, it has taken on even more meaning. Like many of you reading this, I look back on my 30+ year career (in nursing and law) with gratitude for much of the journey, yet I also clearly remember those long, tiring days when I quietly questioned whether anyone truly cared for us in our workplace.
I often wonder whether things might have been different if they had the time, funding, and understanding of lifestyle medicine and had recognised the value of encouraging healthy self-care habits for their employees. Perhaps stress, anxiety, and sickness could have been lessened as a result?
Perhaps, if they had really listened and had offered a helping hand through one-to-one health and wellness coaching, nutritional advice, mindfulness, meditation, holistic therapies and access to social exercise as well as access to spiritual guidance, their employees may have been more energised, calmer, happier and healthier?
I truly believe our lives, both at work and beyond, could have been enriched by a whole-person approach — though I understand that many of these therapies and concepts were not well known or widely embraced back then.
Today I still have the pleasure of working with so many wonderful people in the health and care industry through my own health compliance business, Inspired for Health Ltd, and whilst many deeply value their teams, it is clear that many people are utterly exhausted at work. They care deeply and attentively for others, yet constant deadlines, time pressures, and daily demands often leave them with little space to care for themselves. Over time, their own needs and wellbeing goals are being pushed aside, sometimes leading to a decline in both physical and mental health.
Imagine the difference it could make if all organisations began to truly value and nurture their teams — supporting their health and wellbeing and equipping them with the self-care tools to thrive. Perhaps the impact on both their personal lives and the workplaces could be profound... Fingers crossed for a holistic and compassionate future!
To support others and to nurture my own life long interest in holistic wellbeing, I completed several courses on:

And my learning/training journey is still continuing. Watch this space!
